Burrel Green Hart was a soldier for the Union in the Civil War, serving in the Missouri Marine Brigade. Burrel made several moves in his life; from Macoupin County, Illinois from the time of his marriage; to Adair and Macon Counties, Missouri through 1860 and 1870; to McPherson County, Kansas (1880), and finally settling in Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas, by 1897.

Burrel's first wife was Susan Lair, daughter of Samuel Lair and Elizabeth Miller. Susan was born October 26, 1824, in today's Macoupin County, Illinois, and they married August 22, 1843, also in Macoupin County. Burrel and Susan were the parents of nine children, seven of whom were living at the time of the 1900 Federal Census. The following eight children who are known are: Robert, Mary, Susan, Minerva, Paulina, Andrew, Alexander and Elizabeth (not in birth order). Burrel and Susan parted later in life; Susan Hart, "widow" of Burrel G. Hart, is found in the 1890 Veterans and Widows Census living in Salt Creek Township, Adair County, Missouri; and she is living with her daughter Paulina Landes in the 1900 Federal Census, Grand River Township, Decatur County, Iowa. Susan died December 21, 1905, in Grand River Township, Decatur County, Iowa.

Burrel married Sarah Fenimore about 1887. She died December 23, 1901. Burrel's last wife was Nancy Jane Hubbel, widow of George Sampson, whom he married in Hutchinson, Kansas, in August 1902. She outlived him.

Burrel was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization for Union veterans. His obituary reads:

"Comrade Hart Dead - End Came This Morning to Hutchinson Man, 83 years old. Burrel G. Hart died Wednesday at his home 514 East Second Avenue, aged 83 years. He had been sick for some time, following a stroke of paralysis, and death had been expected for some days. Mr. Hart was a member of the Christian Church, and the funeral was held from that church at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon, under the direction of the G.A.R. Mr. Hart was a valiant soldier in the War of the Rebellion, and bore a record as a defender of his country. He had lived in Hutchinson a long time. He was married three times and leaves as his widow Mrs. Nancy J. Hart, to whom he was married in this city a few years ago. He left both children and stepchildren." - Hutchinson Independent, Saturday, March 14, 1908
