Dora Alice Smith was born to Oliver Barr Smith and Sephronia Linkfield Ravlin. She married John Garrett Compton on March 28, 1877 at the age of 16 in Lincoln, Wisconsin. They had two children. She then married John Nagle Cotter on October 14, 1885 at the age of 24 in Jenny Bull Falls (Merrill), Wisconsin. Together they had four children.
