William and his brother Milberry were two of the sons of Jehoiakim BURGHARDT/BURGET, Sr. (b. 1 Jul 1752, Loonenburg, Greene, NY to Coenraad BURGAART/BURGET/BURGHARDT and Judick VAN VALKENBURG). Jehoiakim married Sarah WHITE around 1770 in Schoharie or Middleburgh, NY (she was born 1753, NY; d. Geneva, Ashtabula Co., OH) [Jehoiakim Sr. probably died in either Kortright, Delaware Co., NY or Smithville, Chenango Co., NY, and Sarah [or the Indian maiden] presumably migrated from NY with her children to Harpersfield, Ashtabula Co., OH, ca 1813. She was also presumed to have been buried on the homestead of her son, Jehoiakim BURGET, Jr., in Geneva, Ashtabula Co., OH [originally Harpersfield], because the locals would not allow an Indian to be buried in the local town cemetery.]

Excerpt from History of the Western Reserve by Harriet Taylor Upton - Vol. 3, 1910

'Prominent among the early settlers of Harpersfield township, Ashtabula County, was William Burgett, Sr., who came here from New York with his family in 1819, being then past forty years of age, his birth having occurred in 1776. Wild animals of all kinds then roamed at will through the dense woods, and a few Indians remained, but were for the most part friendly. Building a log cabin, he was here employed as a tiller of the soil until his death, in 1830. He married, in New York, Abbie Andrews, by whom he had seven children, as follows; Jehoiakim W., John, Reuben, Priscilla, William Jr., David and Ursula.'
