Melvin Eugene Jefferys, 66, Tuscumbia, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999.

His graveside service will be Wednesday, September 22, at 10 a.m. at Poplar Creek Cemetery with C.G. Redding officiating.

Burial will follow in Poplar Creek Cemetery. The family will accept friends for visitation Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home, Sheffield.

He was a loving father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother and friend. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Lawrence County, Ala. He was one of the founders and the first fire chief of White Oak Volunteer Fire Department. He was a former chief of police in the cities of Cherokee and Weston, Ala.,former assistant chief of police in Muscle Shoals and Leighton, and one of the founders of the Cherokee and Colbert rescue squads.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jerry Jefferys, his son, Albert Eugene Jefferys and his grandson, Braden Franks.

He is survived by daughters, Patsy Gray, Tuscumbia, Shannon Grigsby, Killen, Stacy Brown, Walled Lake, Mich, Michelle Franks, Tuscumbia Tabitha Woodall, Russellville; sons, Tim Jefferys, Leighton, Tony Jefferys, Cherokee; sister, Lorene Landers, Tuscumbia; grandchildren, Michael Jefferys, Eric Jefferys, Chris Gray, Miranda Gray, Todd Jefferys, Allyson Jefferys, Tyler Grigsby, Karll Grigsby, Devan Franks, Evan Bragwell, Rhonda Brown, Earl Brown, Jr.; great-granddaughter, Makayla Jefferys.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Pallbearers will be Donnie Moore, Hollis Moore, Greg Cobb, Gregg Michael, Travis Dawson, Doug Rickman, Tim Grigsby.

Honorary pallbearers will be Eric Jefferys, Michael Jefferys, Chris Gray, Todd Jefferys, Tyler Grigsby, Devan Franks, Evan Bagwell, Bryce Graham Jr., Robert Graham and Little Willie Woodall.
