Mrs. Elizabeth Williams died at Sheridan, April 26, aged 72 years. Elizabeth J. Ledford was born in Adrian (Audrain) county, Mo., January 9, 1843, and crossed the plains to Montana in 1863, arriving at Bannack City in December of that year. She taught school at Bannack City in the early part of the year 1864, then came to Alder gulch in the summer of that year, where she resided until 1865, when she removed to the upper Ruby valley, remaining there continuously until January, 1914, when she removed to Sheridan, where she made her home until the time of her death. Elizabeth J. Ledford was united in marriage to Captain James Williams, of vigilante fame, December 27, 1866. Captain Williams died February 21, 1887. Mrs. Williams was one of the first of the early pioneers of Montana, and saw many exciting events in the early days of Alder gulch. She was a woman of many lovable and excellent qualities and will be sincerely mourned by her family and friends. She leaves to mourn her loss four sons and three daughters: James M. Williams of Blaine, Idaho; John T. Williams of Waterloo, Mont.; George W. Williams of Saskatchewan, Can.; Charles R. Williams of Sheridan, Mont.; Mrs. Savillar M. Kinkead of Ruby, Mont.; Mrs. Anna R. Powers of Butte, Mont., and Miss Alma Maude Williams. The death of Mrs. Williams was due to paralysis. Interment took place in the upper Ruby cemetery by the side of her husband.
