Alice (Haslett) Batchelor Obituary
Nov. 25, 1880 - Oct 23, 1906

Again the angel of death visits our village and takes from our midst, Alice May, the loving wife of Atty. Herbert Batchelor, and makes a happy home so lonely. In losing her from our midst we lose one whose place cannot be filled, and that is of being a kind and affectionate mother and wife.

Mrs. Batchelor's death was caused from heart trouble, and a complication of diseases, and although her death was hourly expected, it came as a heavy blow to her many friends, who still lived in hopes that she would eventually get well.

Alice May Batchelor, nee Haslett, the oldest child of Mr. William Haslett and his wife, Maggie, nee Ashbrook, was born on November 25, 1880 in Bertrand Township, Berrien County, Mich. Her early life was spent with her parents in the country south of Buchanan. Practically her whole life has been spent in and around Buchanan.

On April 12, 1904, she was united in holy marriage to Mr. Herbert Batchelor, with whom she has lived happily ever since. About a year ago they purchased their home on Alexander Street, hoping to enjoy its comforts for many years, but, alas, the plans of God had chosen otherwise and the happy home was so soon to become the scene of death and bitterest of sorrows.

On September 26, 1906 a baby boy came to home to share its happiness and comforts. Mrs. Batchelor had not been very strong for some time and in giving life to her child laid her own life a sacrifice upon motherhood's altar. For the last four weeks she has been in critical condition, gradually failing, until she peacefully fell asleep at noon on Oct. 23, 1906, from heart failure, from which she has suffered for several years. She leaves behind her a sorrowing husband and infant child besides Mildred her six year old daughter by a previous marriage; her father and her mother; two brothers, Claude and Earl; two sisters, Mrs. Edward Riffer and Miss Bernice Haslett, and an aged grandmother, besides numerous relatives and friends.

Mrs. Batchelor was a patient sufferer. Her happy disposition showed itself here as in her life. She was kind hearted, a true friend, a pleasant companion. Her quiet unassuming manner won her many friends who keenly feel their loss of so noble and true a friend, and in whose member she will live on by her kind words and deeds.

NOTE: Alice's first husband was Willard H. Broceus. Alice's parents are buried in the Howe Cemetery, Bertrand Twp, Berrien County, MI.
