Citizen of the Republic of Texas - Arrived between Mar 2, 1836 & Oct 1, 1837 with wife, Mary (Brown) Houchin and 6 children. John and Mary had one more child in Texas. After Mary's death, John married Nancy (Knowles) Barr, the widow of Andrew Jackson Barr and had two more children.

John died between 26 August 1861 (will written) and 30 September 1861 (will proven). He is assumed to have been buried in an unmarked grave on his land in Belton, Bell County, Texas. This land is now under Belton Lake. Nancy married Rev. James Gaston after John's death.

John is either still buried on his land under the lake or is one of several unknown graves dug up by the Army Corps of Engineers and moved to several different cemeteries throughout the Bell County area. An extensive search for his grave has been made by several descendants, to no avail.
