William F. Degan SOUTH BOSTON William F. Degan, (Col. U.S. Marine Corps., Ret.), age 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009. Born in Boston, Mr. Degan grew up in South Boston. A former 50 year resident of Squantum, he had resided almost 40 years in South Boston. Mr. Degan was a retired Insurance Executive of Liberty Mutual Co., Boston, as well as a retired Col. of the U.S. Marine Corps. He had served as an Aviator in WW II and the Korean War, was Co-founder & Honorary Chairman of the McKeon Post Boxing Program, a late member of the Boston Harbor Yacht Club, a South Boston Sports Hall of Fame Inductee and a graduate of Boston College. The beloved husband of 60 years of the late Marie C. (Coyne) Degan, he is survived by his cherished children; Elaine D. Niles & her husband, Peter of Clinton, CT and Sally D. Glora & her husband, Edward of South Boston, his devoted daughter-in-law, Karen M. Degan of FL, his loving grandchildren, Peter, Sarah & Andrew Niles and William & his wife, Tara & Brian Degan and his loving nephew, Scott M. Coyne & his daughter, Lara. He was the father of the late U.S. Marshal William F. Degan and brother of the late John & Charles Degan and Francis Degan (B.F.D.) A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Brigid Church, South Boston, Wednesday at 10 AM. Visiting hours will be held at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home, 326 Granite Ave., Milton, Tuesday 4 to 8 PM. Interment Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Brigid Church, 841 E.
