She grew up in Albion, Iowa but also lived in Whitten, and Marshalltown before moving to Texas.
Lelah was married first to Charles Delay, one son was born to Charles and Lelah, second she married John Thorn, with whom she had five children.
After John Thorn's death she married Russell Smith, and fourth to Johnnie Carpenter.

Esquire T. J. Noll, of this city, was called upon one evening recently to unite in marriage two employees of the Monroe hotel, Miss Lena Bentley, of Albion and Charles Delay, of this city, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Delay.
