Albert Blake Heard

(OXFORD) Albert Blake Heard, 69, of Oxford died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in Anniston.

Services were Sunday, April 1, at 2 p.m. at Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel, Anniston, with Dr. Ron Ethridge officiating. Burial was in Midway United Methodist Cemetery in Randolph County.

Survivors include his wife Alice Needham of Oxford; three sons, Albert Blake Heard Jr. of Oxford, Brent Needham Heard of Williamsburg, Va., and Patrick Kyle Heard of Huntsville; three sisters, Daisy Mae Eason of Wedowee, Jean Owen Cosper of Oxford and
Ruby Anna Daniel of Florence; two brothers, George Thomas Heard of Oxford and Charles Lee Heard of Decatur; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jerry Thornton, Ronald Edwards, Johnny Galloway, Charles Hess, Ken Shropshire and Ben Gilreath. Honorary pallbearers were past and present employees of the Anniston Star.

Mr. Heard was a native of Randolph County and a resident of Calhoun County most of his life. He graduated in 1950 from Randolph County High School. He was a charter member of the Oxford Quarterback Club, past member of the Oxford Rotary Club, Oxford Baseball for Youth volunteer, and avid supporter of Marion Military Institute.

He was a Korean War veteran, where he served aboard the storied destroyer "USS The Sullivans."

Mr. Heard worked in the composing room of the Anniston Star for more than 40 years until his retirement as production manager in 1997.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lanie Frances Morrison Heard, and his father, Stell Blake Heard, one sister, Myrtis Bates, and two brothers, Arthur Heard and Arnton Heard.

Arrangements were by Brown and Kughn Memory Chapel, Anniston.
