In failing health for the last two years, August A. Paulsen, former mayor of Kiel and long associated with local government, passed away at his home at 709 Fourth street here Monday evening at 8:30.
Throughout his life he was active not only in governmental circles but in the commercial field as well. While still a young man and a resident of the town of New Holstein he was president of a farmers' organization and was interested in the conducting of farm institutes. For ten years he was chairman of the town of New Holstein, and for several years was chairman of the Calumet County board of supervisors. He was one of a group of men who organized the old Eastern Wisconsin Telephone Co. and organized pea canning factories in New Holstein and Chilton.
In 1905 he moved to Kiel, where he continued his interest in civic matters. Known for his integrity and faithfulness to duty, he was named president of the village of Kiel. When the village was incorporated as a city, he was its first full-term mayor. These two offices he held for 13 years.
During the period of 1919 to 1924, he was president and owner of the J. M. Duecker Hardware Co., now the Rud. Greve Co. In his capacity of mayor of Kiel, Mr. Paulsen gave always his best efforts, and even in the face of occasional criticism he held to his convictions, working always for what he felt was best for the community.
Mr. Paulsen was born February 1, 1862 on a farm in the town of New Holstein. He attended the district school there, and completed his education in the Chilton high school, from which institution he was graduated. He was married September 10, 1889 to Miss Annie M. Abrahams of New Holstein, and the couple settled on a farm near the village. The family moved to Kiel in 1905.
He is survived by his widow and one son Edgar A. and daughter-in-law, Irma, at home; a brother, Arthur, of Milwaukee; and one sister, Mrs. Walter Stark of Plymouth.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon from the Paulsen home, and burial will be in the New Holstein cemetery.
