Paulsen, Ernst W. – 1910
At lightning speed on Sunday, the news spread of the death of County Judge Ernst W. Paulsen from Chilton. For the past five weeks, because of his debilitating illness, he and his wife were staying at the home of his brother-in-law George Kraemer in Elkhart Lake, where he died suddenly from a heart attack. Mt. Paulsen had been ill for a long time, but his condition did not give rise to any fear that his end was so imminent. That morning he awoke from a peaceful sleep, took his breakfast with apparent ease and also remarked that he was feeling extremely well. These were his last words that before 9 o’clock he got up from him chair to go in the other room, when he suddenly died from a heart attack that brought his life to a quick end.
The deceased, a person who is well known and respected far beyond the boundaries of the county has passed away. Mr. Paulsen was an honest, dutiful civil servant, a well-meaning practitioner, a loyal husband and a good citizen, and enjoyed chatting with his fellow citizens to a great extent. In Chilton and the surround area he had many friends who received news of his sudden demise with great regret.

Ernst Paulsen - Kiel Record

Mr. Ernst Paulsen was born on April 24, 1865 in the Town of New Holstein, a son of Mr. and Mrs. August Paulsen. He attended the public school and acquired a good education, after which he worked for eight years as an apprentice. Then he devoted himself to the study of the law and graduated from the Advocates school in Madison, after which in the year 1898 he practiced as a lawyer in Chilton. In June of 1901 he married Miss Anna Boie from the Town of New Holstein, which was a very happy marriage even though they remained childless. Besides his wife, he leaves behind his mother, three sisters and two brothers, who mourn his untimely death.

His coffin was carried to Chilton on the Tuesday morning train and brought to his home. On Wednesday the burial took place at the cemetery in New Holstein, where his father is laid to rest, with numerous mourners in attendance. Pastor Schildknecht read the burial service.

Judge Paulsen Dead

County Judge Ernst E. Paulsen of Chilton, died at the home of his mother at Elkhart Lake last Sunday morning from a stroke of apoplexy following a long period of failing health. The judge was in our city on a brief visit some time ago and friends at that time remarked that he was not looking at all well, but no one supposed that fate had written for him so quick a death, he having just attained the very prime of a useful life. He was just forty-five years of age on the 24th of April.

Decedent belongs to a large family, all of prominence in our county and like them, Mr. Ernst Paulsen was a man of thrift, industry and broad learning. He was a useful citizen in all that the term implies and in the practice of his profession he was a man who could be implicitly trusted. When he aspired to the county judgeship his election was a foregone conclusion for he was peculiarly suited to the work of that office. He was proficient in several languages and possessed the tact and kindly human sympathies that invited confidence. He was exceedingly exact in the preparation of all legal papers.

Decedent is survived by the deeply sorrowing widow, two brothers, August of Kiel and Arthur of Oshkosh; three sisters, Mrs. Geo. Kraemer of Elkhart Lake, Mrs. Wm Pinnow of Chilton and Mrs. H.H. Greve of Kiel. The body was conveyed to Chilton on Monday evening and on Wednesday afternoon the funeral services were held there, after which the remains were brought to New Holsteiin for burial in the family lot at that place. The NEWS expresses the sentiment of the people of this section of Calumet Co., in extending heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.
