Martha E. Hansen was born in Frederickshold, Norway, and came to this country with her parents during her childhood. She was a rural schoolteacher, and was a great help to her husband in preparing his sermons. He would ask her if he had made any grammatical errors in his sermon. She was his literary critic, and listened to his sermons intently. Asked once by a member of the family why she did not stop and converse with folks after the church service, she replied that she wanted to retain the spirit of her husband's sermon. She was a frail woman who was busy raising a family of eight children without the aid of modern conveniences. She was a quiet, serious woman, but she also had a sense of humor. A granddaughter once said to her, "Grandma, you are so little." Her quick reply was, "You aren't so big yourself." She was such a sweet-faced, gentle woman, who suffered a great deal of pain in her back for years without a complaint. Doctors never seemed to locate the cause of her pain. After her husband's death, she kept house for the boys on the farm, and when they sold out, she went to live with her daughters, Lillian and Etta, and visited the other children, when convenient. She died May 3, 1936 and is buried beside her husband in the country cemetery in Belvidere Township.
