Karl Vernon Church 1923 ~ 2009

Karl passed away 31 July 2009. He was born in St. George, Utah 29 April 1923 at the home of his maternal grandparents, Warren and Mary Etta Lee Cox. He was the fourth child of Vernon and Areta Cox Church.

He was raised in LaVerkin, Utah on the family dairy farm which operated for many years delivering milk to the east side of Washington County, including to the old Zion Lodge.

He graduated from Hurricane High School in 1941. He participated in track, football, tennis, and basketball in High School and at Dixie College. He was drafted into the Army in April 1943 and served as a Staff Sergeant machine gunner in the 43rd Infantry. He served in the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Philippines, and Japan. He returned the fall of 1945.

He married Grace Duncan on 12 December 1945 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They are the parents of six children: Sharon (Duane) Bauer, Mace K (Lillian) Church, Chris V (Jane) Church, Dale E Church, Jeanette (Alan) Moss, and David W Church. They have 43 grandchildren and 75 great-grandchildren.

They lived in LaVerkin, Hurricane, Salt Lake City, Bountiful, Richfield, Cedar City, Sandy and since 1991 Midvale, Utah.

He was active in the LDS Church. He was a Scout Master, member of the bishopric, teacher, High Councilor, ward and stake Sunday School presidency, High Priest Quorum secretary and faithful home teacher.

He worked on the family dairy farm until allergies and malaria, contracted during his war service, necessitated a move to Salt Lake City for other employment. He worked for Water Works Equipment and Pacific States Cast Iron Company for 19 years, covering all of Southern Utah with the water system needs of municipalities and golf courses. He took a medical retirement at age 50 due to complications from the malaria and hearing loss. He was an avid reader.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Pauline Church Wilson Wulfenstein, Mildred Church, LaReta Church Gates; brothers, Richard LaVon Church and twin brothers Warren Harvey Church and Walter Hayden Church. He is survived by six children; 43 grandchildren, and 84 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, 7 Aug. 2009, at 10:00 a.m. in the Midvale 8th LDS Ward Chapel, 8350 So Jackson St., Midvale, UT. A viewing will be held from 9:00-10:00 at the church on Friday. Burial in the LaVerkin City Cemetery, LaVerkin, Utah, 7 Aug. 2009 at 6:00 p.m. with military honors by American Legion Post # 100.
