Tom was the first son and second child of 12 born to Walter and Iva Lee Gasaway on Petit Jean Mountain in Conway County AR. He was married to Martha Rainey of the Rose Creek area of Conway and Perry Counties in Arkansas. Later he married Gladys Branch--her sister lived with Tom and Gladys for several years while she raised her young son, but Tom and Gladys had no children of their own.
Tom moved to California and worked several jobs in the Los Angeles and Merced County regions, eventually settling in Cressy where he was near two of his sisters.
Tom loved to talk about and work on cars. His first was a Ford model T and he later came to have an affinity for "Datsuns" (now Nissan) because he claimed it was easy and cheap to change out engines if need be.
