Selma Attaya Hodges Smith passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Good Samaritan Village on Hinkle Drive, Denton, Texas.

She was born in Picayune, Miss., on August 4, 1914 to Saleem A. Attaya and Tameena (Naher) Attaya.

A private service for family was conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009, at Coker Funeral Home, Sanger, by Chaplain Bill Bennett of Good Samaritan Village. Burial followed the service at Sanger Cemetery.

Before moving to Sanger in 1995, she resided and worked in her hometown area of Picayune and nearby New Orleans, La. She attended Baptist churches in the area and was a longtime member of Juniper Grove Baptist Church in Poplarville, Miss. She remained a member there and supported the church until her death.

Selma was preceded in death by her parents, an older sister and two husbands. She had no children of her own but nurtured younger siblings as though they were her children. She is survived by three sisters, three brothers and their wives, many nieces and nephews and their spouses and children.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be addressed to Good Samaritan Society, Denton Village, 2500 Hinkle Drive, Denton, TX 76201.
