Sallie was the daughter of John M. Barr and Evelon Binnion. She married her first cousin Francis Marion, son of Mariah Binnion and Issac Hobbs, upon his release from serving in the Confederate Army and as a POW at Camp Mansfield, LA, while he was visiting with her family. Although Francis' uncle and parents were originally from Missouri he settled in Louisiana with his wife. The land donated for Mt. Gilead was part of his Confederate Land Grant and was donated for the cemetery use providing his descendants be allowed to be buried there as well.

People will often refer to her as "Sarah" rather than her given name of Sallie this is because of a transcription error in the marriage certificate. The original shows a name of Sarah but the actual certificate is shown in her given name of Sallie, Sallie is also the name she used in all correspondence with the government and other entities.

Please note she was the person that selected and purchased this memorial for herself and husband and you can see how she displayed her given name.

She was also the first rural Post Mistress in the north end of Caddo parish, known as "Mailboxes".
