John R. Kratochvil II 47 of 1004 Spengler St., a packaging designer for Weyehauser Paper Co., died Monday of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home with burial at 3 p.m. Sunday in Hawthorne Memorial Gardens in Jefferson City, MO. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today.
Mr. Kratochvil a native of Jefferson City, MO. had lived in Jackson for 13 years. He was a member of the American Civil Liberties Union and Mississippi 20/20, an environmental group. He was also a member of Witness for Peace.
"Above all, he was a pacifist and a person who placed principle and convietion above everything else." said a friend Ken Lawrence of Jackson. "His ability to bring people together to bridge the gulf that divides people so often was his outstanding public trait. In private, he was concerned for people who suffered in ways he never did, whether it be social reality or a private individual problem such as mental illness. He was very devoted to his fellow human beings. There is no question he leaves a void," he said.
The Unitarian Church members are humanists and Kratochvil was "definitely a humanist", said John Derby, another longtime friend in Jackson. "He was a very outgoing person. He was very much interested in social issues," he said. "He was really a great guy who would help you in every way he could. He was a good friend," he said.
Survivors include: wife, Nana: daughters Melanie Kratochvil of Clinton and Stacy Kawamura of Jackson; step-daughter, Tina Truett of Columbus, Ga; sons Andrew T. Kratochvil and John R. Kratochvil III both of Jackson, step-son, Richard R. Florey of Guam; parents J. Rogers and Thelma Kratochvil of Jefferson City, Mo.; sisters Margaret Kratochvil of Jefferson City, MO.; Mary W. Gove of Cleveland Heights., Ohio; and two step-grandchildren.
