John Wilfred Gaudet, the sixth child born to John Peter and Sophie was born in Bath, Maine, on September 5, 1904. He was American born a British subject. He was about five years old when his parents and siblings returned to live and work on their farm in St. Edwards, P.E.I. (Smith Road). At a country-dance, Wilfred met a beautiful red headed girl by the name of Fedilise Perry. It was love at first sight. They were married on November 21, 1928. Fedilise was just seventeen, Wilfred, twenty-three. Wilfred bought 23 acres of land from his father; it was part of the family farm and right next door.
Wilfred settled down to farming and raising a family. He farmed the land, but he also worked construction and carpentry on the side. He helped build the Miminegash Church. He made a pretty good living for his family. Nine children were born to them while living on the farm, four boys and five girls.
Wilfred and Fedilise had their share of hardships. Their baby son George died at the age of one, then ten years later, their five-year-old daughter, Shirley died during the diphtheria epidemic. With a growing family and not much work on P.E.I., Wilfred decided to move his family to Montreal. He worked in the construction industry for G.M. Gest until he retired at age 65. In 1957, their son Paul was born. He was a great joy to them. This was the child of their mature years; Wilfred was 51 years of age.
Wilfred built a beautiful home in Ville St. Catherine, Quebec. They lived there with their son Paul. In 1993, Wilfred decided to return to his roots; good old P.E.I. They moved in with their daughter Lucy and her husband. They had an extension built to her house in Leoville. It was not St. Edward but it was close and they still had many friends and family to visit.
Wilfred liked a good game of cards but he was not addicted to them. He was very good at puzzles, Rubics Cube, Hi IQ and any puzzle game was a synch to him. He had a very intelligent mind. He lived a full and happy life. He died on October 22, 1996. His wife and eight children miss his happy laugh. He always had a smile and a laugh for young and old.
