Alma (Gaudet) Dwyer of 19 Pearson St., Andover, died Dec. 5 at the Anlaw Nursing Home in Lawrence. She was 88.
Born in Prince Edward Island, Canada, Mrs. Dwyer belonged to St. Augustine's Parish in Andover and the Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Monica.
The widow of Charles W. Dwyer, she leaves five sons, John, George and Joseph of California, Charles of Salem, N.H. and Edward of Andover; two sisters, Eleanor Gaudet and Minolia Brown, both of Montreal, Canada; three brothers, Philip Gaudet of Montreal and Arthur Gaudet of Prince Edward Island and a number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday morning at St. Augustine's Church, Andover. Burial will be in St. Augustine's Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Burke Funeral Home, 390 North Main St., Andover.

Alma Gaudet was born in 1895 and raised on Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), Canada. She was the oldest child of John and Sophie Gaudet. She spent a very happy childhood on the family farm with her parents, brothers, and sisters. In the later part of her teens, she went to Montreal to seek fame and fortune. There she met Charles Dwyer (born 1891) who was a handsome young man in the Canadian Army. Charles was from England. She asked him the time and he pointed out to her the large clock just ahead.
In January of 1920, they married and during the next 17 years had 11 children, which included two sets of twins. The first three children were born in Canada. Some time in 1924 or 1925 they moved to Andover, Massachusetts. Shortly after their last child was born in 1937, they purchased a house on Pearson Street in Andover. They remained in that little house.
Alma was a very good seamstress. In 1948-1949, she agreed to make 100 band uniforms for Punchard High. After making 75 of them, she found she needed help with the last 25 in order to have them done in time. She was paid $5.00 per uniform; this did not include fabric cost, as the school provided that. The following year she made cheerleading uniforms for the same school. All of this sewing was done in her spare time as she was working full time on the 2nd shift at the Shawsheen Woolen Mill. When she was not working on uniforms, she did all kinds of alterations and dressmaking for family and paying customers. After being laid-off from the mill, she made slipcovers for people charging $5.00 for a chair, and $10.00 for a couch. People she was sewing for that day would pick her up from her home. If they did not have a sewing machine, she would bring hers with her and she spent the day in their home making slipcovers. Again, in her spare time, she made drapes and pillows for customers. She did not need to use patterns for her creations, and most of the time she did not even use pins!
Alma was also very active in the church and a devoted Catholic. She belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Augustine's Parish in Andover. She made altar clothes, drapery and vestments. And as if this was not enough, she somehow found time to mend linens for the Andover Inn at Philips Academy. Because of all this, Alma knew many people and had a lot of friends. Alma died in 1983, Charles in 1976. They will spend eternity together in St. Augustine's Cemetery, Andover, Massachusetts.

Lillian was born October 17, 1920 (Bernice's twin) and died during the year 1968. She had TB and married a man from the Danvers, Massachusetts State Hospital.
Bernice was born October 17, 1920 (Lillian's twin) and died in 1921.
A son, Charles born March 17, 1922 and died after retirement. Smoked and drank himself to death.
John was born March 20, 1924. He moved to Eldorado, Colorado and had a heart attack while building his home. He died days later on the 9th of December, 1986.
George was born June 20, 1925 and died some time in 2008.
Wilfred and Winifred (twins) were born September 2, 1926 and both died at birth.
Hilda was born August 31, 1927 and died years later in a airplane crash in California; her body was never found.
Marie Theresa was born August 15, 1928.
Fredrick was born October 14, 1930 and resides in California.
Charles was born September 17, 1931 and died in Florida.
Edward was born July 16, 1937 and resides in Bradford, Massachusetts.
