Hans Peter Jensen Chilton Times January 26, 1878

DEATH OF H. P. JENSEN, Esq.,
We briefly alluded to the sudden and unexpected death of this much regretted gentleman last week. The particulars as we learned are as follows:

The night previous to his departure he enjoyed himself at a social game of card with his son until eleven o'clock when he partook of a cup of tea and a small piece of bread and retired to rest in apparently good health. In the morning the girl went to call him to coffee but found him apparently asleep with his head resting upon one of his arms. He was not disturbed and in an hour afterwards some of his grandchildren entered his bed room and found him in the same position and reported that he looked pale whereupon his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Emil Jensen, went to the room and discovered that the vital spark had fled.

And thus quietly passed away one of the noblest men that ever lived in Calumet County—a faithful husband, a kind father, a true friend, a good citizen and a gentleman in every acceptation of the term. He has been a resident of this county since 1853 and held the offices of Co. Treasurer, Town clerk and Justice of the Peace, and we are certain that he had not a single enemy in the world, but all who knew him loved, honored and respected him for his many noble qualities and sterling worth and many, many years will clapse(sic) before he fades from memory, and although he has gone to the bourne(sic) from whence no traveler returns, the example he set, while here below, of all that was good, true and beautiful in human nature, will live forever.

The remains were taken in charge on Sunday afternoon by the Masonic fraternity, of which he was an honored member, and deposited in New Holstein's beautiful cemetery according to the rites of that Order.

The deceased leaves surviving him the following grown up sons and daughters: Emil Jensen of New Holstein, Chas. Jensen, of Silver Lake, Ashland county, Mrs. Wm. Paulsen, of Chilton, and Mrs. Fred Mohr of Kiel.
Of the lamented deceased it can be truly said:

"An honest man here lies at rest
As e'er God with his image blest!
The friend of man, the friend of truth;
The friend of age, and guide of youth;

"Few hearts like his, with virtue warmed,
Few head with knowledge so informed;
If there's another world, he lives in bliss;
If there is none, he made the best of this."

Hans Peter Jensen was born at Godebue Duchy of Schleswig, September 30th, 1810. He filled the office of teacher and cantor at Bergenhusen, and there are still many among us, who entered the path of life by the guidance of his hand. True love to his fatherland made the then waging political disturbances unbearable for him and he and his family emigrated to America, to make their home in the far West.
