He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Columbus (Lum) and Louella Stanley Burkhalter; his brothers, William Oliver, Jesse, Walter, and Melvin (Bill) Burkhalter; and his sisters, Esther O'Bryant and Kathleen Pearson.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Jo Ann McGee Burkhalter; his sons, James Clifton Burkhalter, II (Allison), and John Wesley Burkhalter (Daphne); his grandchildren, Trey, Brock, Brady, John Wesley, Blake, and Victoria; his sister, Melba B. Mills (Joe); his brothers, Ferman Burkhalter (Jean), Jimmy Burkhalter (Wanda), Therman Burkhalter (Katherine), and C. O. Burkhalter; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family.
James was the twelfth of thirteen children, born to Jesse (Lum) and Louella Stanley Burkhalter in Pickens County, Alabama. He was the owner of the James C. Burkhalter Builders, Burkhalters Excavating Co., and many other businesses in the Tuscaloosa area. He loved to hunt and fish, and enjoyed cooking fish while hosting his many friends. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Pallbearers will be Ganus Burkhalter, Phillip Watkins, Dale Parham, Clyde Rector, Holly Dyer, Charles Patterson, Chris Gray, and Billy Patton.
Honorary pallbearers are friends and neighbors of the Echola, Gordo, Fayette, and Tuscaloosa communities, Mark Babb and staff of CVS Pharmacy in Gordo, Dr. John Brandon, Dr. Paul Drake Lavender and staff of Gordo Family Medicine, Dr. Pamela Hughes and staff, faculty and fans of Fayette and Gordo High Schools, and all of his hunting and fishing buddies that enjoyed time with him at the "Old Place."
