GORDO Melba Hildreth Burkhalter Mills, age 78, of Gordo, died Jan. 18, 2008, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Sunset Funeral Home with Elder Ronald Gilmore and Elder Jimmy Burkhalter officiating and music by Jill Jones. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Columbus (Lum) and LouElla Stanley Burkhalter, her brothers, William Oliver, Jesse, Walter, Melvin (Bill), James, and Ermon Burkhalter; and her sisters, Esther O'Bryant and Kathleen Pearson.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Joe Mills; her son, Joe David Mills (Brenda); her brothers, Ferman Burkhalter (Jean), Therman Burkhalter (Katherine), Jimmy Burkhalter (Wanda), and C. O. Burkhalter; and her great grandchildren, Josh Mills and Zach Mills (Lori).
Melba was a devoted housewife and mother. She loved children and was a nursery supervisor for children. She was an excellent flower arranger and home gardener.
Pallbearers will be Carl Burkhalter, Jim Burkhalter, Roger O'Bryant, Phillip Burkhalter, Paul Burkhalter, and Donald Gene Pate.
Honorary pallbearers are our many friends and neighbors from the Gordo area, Dr. Stephen Browne, and the staff of Internal Medicine.
