Mary was the daughter of Peter Cornelius Gallagher and Mary Ellen Ferry. She was born in Beaver Meadows, Pennsylvania, but moved to Luzerne, Pennsylvania around 1906 with her family. She graduated from Luzerne High School and the Wilkes Barre Business College. She married Arthur Matthews on November 24, 1924. They had no children. After their marriage, she and her husband briefly moved to Camden, New Jersey. When they moved back home, she and her husband continued to live with her parents. She worked as a bookkeeper for Wales Adding Machine Company. Mary was a devout Catholic, and was very religious. Every year, her sisters' children and grandchildren would get a greeting card from her on the Saint's day for the Catholic saint for which they were named.
