LIEUT. HAKE
His body will arrive in Platteville Tuesday. Lieut. Hake was killed Mar. 10, 1945, when his B-29 Superfortress was shot down off Honshu island, Japan. His plane was one of 258 that participated in a night bombardment mission over Tokyo.
Born in Lima township Apr. 19, 1916, he was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hake. After being graduated in 1934 from Platteville high school, he studied aeronautics and was graduated in 1939 from the Glendale, Calif., school of aviation, then was employed as an aircraft mechanic by Douglas Aircraft Co., Santa Monica, Calif., before enrolling at Platteville State Teachers college. He was assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scout troop 83, Platteville and a member of Co. M, Wisconsin national guard. In Oct., 1940 he trained with Co. M. at Camp Beauregard, La., then transferred to the Army Air Corps and was stationed at Midland, Tex., in March, 1942.
In January, 1943, he was graduated as a bombardier and was commissioned a second lieutenant. As a first lieutenant, he instructed for 18 months at Big Springs, Tex. Following advanced training at Great Bend, Kans., he was assigned to B-29s at Kearney, Neb., and on Feb. 18, 1945, left for Guam. He was killed in action three weeks later.
Surviving are his parents and two brothers, Robert and Dale all of Platteville."
