Son of Melvin Lawrence SHEPHERD and Dollie Luella WARD. Married Della Edna GLENN.

Watauga Democrat, November 3rd, 2004:
Mr. Melvin Lawrence Shepherd, Jr., 82, of U.S. Highway 321 North, Sugar Grove, died Monday afternoon, Nov. 1, 2004, at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born in Forest Hill, Maryland, Jan. 4, 1922, a son of the late Melvin L. Shepherd, Sr. and Dolly Ward Shepherd.

Mr. Shepherd retired as a rural mail carrier after 31 years of service, and was an Army veteran, having served in Italy in World War II. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Treasurer.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Glenn Shepherd; two step-daughters, Mayselle Glenn Hagaman and husband, Rev. James Hagaman, of Zionville, and Leta Kay Glenn Cornett and husband, Blaine, of Vilas; one step-son, Henry Frank Glenn and wife, Claire, of Sugar Grove; one sister, Clara May Hardy of Virginia Beach, Va.; two brothers, John A. Shepherd and wife, Shirley, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Paul Shepherd and wife, Evelyn, of Vilas; 11 step-grandchildren, Sue McGinnis, Jeff Hagaman, Pam Johnson, Glenn Cornett, Everett Cornett, Lori Greene, Dillon Glenn, Frank Glenn, Charles Glenn, Tori Cours and Christian Cours; and eight step-great-grandchildren also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Juanita Shepherd Sain and Anna Lee Shepherd Hagaman.

Services will be conducted Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock at Antioch Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Carl Wilson and the Rev. Sonny Hagaman. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. at the church, prior to the services.

Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 130, in care of Earl Moretz, 1106 Briarwood Lane, Boone, N.C. 28607 or to the Gideon's International, Boone Camp, P.O. Box 3602, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Graveside services and burial will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 o'clock at the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. James Hagaman.
