Clara Booton Saunders was born July 28 1870 in Knox County, Illinois. That was in a day when travel by covered wagon was a mode of travel. When Clara was 13, the family traveled westward arriving in Laclede County, Missouri. They liked the area so well that they built their home here and became permanent residents and active members of this community. Though young in years, Clara qualified herself to teach in the public schools and for 14 years trained and taught boys and girls. Her teaching career continued until she married Thadeus B. Saunders and into their home two children were born. Mary Catherine Saunders and Sarah Margaret Saunders. Sarah Margaret died at the age of six months. Within less than three and a half years after their marriage, Thad died. The widow and her daughter, Mary Catherine, continued on the large farm. Clara died at the age of almost 90 years.
