Sidney Herman Grona

Sidney Herman Grona, 84, of Center Point and formerly of Fredericksburg and Kerrville, died Monday, July 27, 2009.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 29, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Marks officiating. Theresa Colvin was the organist and Gary Colvin, the soloist.

Interment followed in Der Stadt Friedhof.

Visitation was held Tuesday evening, July 28, at the funeral home.

Grona was born May 30, 1925, in Fredericksburg, the son of Otto Herman Grona and Estella Klein Grona. He grew up in the Morris Ranch community.

He served in the U.S. Army from July 13, 1944, until June 24, 1946, and was serving with Co. L, 289th Infantry, 75th Division when he was taken prisoner of war. He received numerous awards and citations for his service.

Grona was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion and over the years had been engaged in the lumber yard and construction business.

He is survived by one daughter, two sons and spouses, including Rochelle and Ronnie Lumpkins and Boyce and Juanice Grona, all of Harper, and Shelton and Jenifer Grona of Edna; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are two brothers, one sister and spouses, including Hayden and Vera Grona of San Antonio; Floyd and Peggy Grona of Fort Worth, and Isabell and Victor Meier of Fredericksburg; and two sisters-in-law, Earlene, Mrs. Clinton Grona, and Virginia, Mrs. Herb Oehler, both of Fredericksburg.

In addition to his parents, Grona was preceded in death by three brothers, including Stanley Grona, Elbert Grona and Clinton Grona.

Memorials may be made to the Hermann Sons Scholarship Fund or to the charity of choice.

Pallbearers included Darrell Atkinson, Preston Atkinson, Wesley Atkinson, Royce Lumpkins, Joe Raymond, Cameron Grona and Christopher Cribbs.
