John Benjamin Flud was the son of Rebecca Smith and Nathaniel Flud. He married Emaline Cooper. He was the brother of George Washington Flud (Flood) and named his son after his brother.

John Benjamin "Kink" Flud served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He served from 1862 to 1865 in Company K, First Arkansas Cavalry. John married Emeline Cooper in May 1859 in Newton County, Arkansas. Emeline Cooper's parents were Thomas and Edia Lewis Cooper.

John and Emaline had eleven children:

2. John Benjamin Flud Jr. (1861- ) m. Ludusky Elvina Capps
3. Sallie Flud (1865 - died young)
4. Polly (Mary A) Flud Dabbs (b 7 August 1866) m: William Dabbs
5. Edia Isabelle Flud Flud (b. 7 August 1866) m: Honey John Flud (son of John Flud and Sarah Nichols)
6. Sarah Jane Flud Pierce (b. 1868) m: John Jenkins Pierce
