Louise Champagne was born on June 28, 1903 in Poplar River township of Red Lake county near Brooks, the daughter of Peter and Idella (Turcotte) Champagne. She was raised and attended rural school near Brooks. She was baptized at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at Lambert.

On November 24, 1921, Louise was united in marriage to Louis Mercil at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Brooks. The couple lived and farmed in the Brooks area until they retired and moved into Brooks. Louis died on July 11, 1980. In 1993, Louise moved to Valley Home in Thief River Falls. She had resided at McIntosh Manor Nursing Home since August 15, 1997.

She was a member of St. Anne's Society and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, baking, cooking, vegetable gardening and canning, flower gardening and especially spending time with her family.

Brooks - Louise Mercil, 97, died Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at McIntosh Manor Nursing Home in McIntosh.

Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, September 22, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Brooks with Father Tim Bushy officiating. Lorraine Mercil was the organist, and Louise's grandchildren served as casketbearers. Interment was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Brooks with Johnson Funeral Service of Red Lake Falls in charge of the arrangements.

Louise is survived by three sons, Don (Genevieve) Mercil of Townsend, Wisc., Everill (Annette) Mercil of Leesburg, Fla. and Lloyd Mercil of Thief River Falls; three daughters, Donna (Willard) Bergeron of Oklee, Dellas (Ron) Paradis of Brooks and Madeline (Parnell) Thibert of St. Charles, Ill.; 38 grandchildren; 94 great-grandchildren; 35 great great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Lorraine Mercil of Brooks; three sisters-in-law; and one brother-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 15 siblings; a grandson, Duane Bergeron; and two great-granddaughters, Christina McRae and Tonya Mercil.Louise Mercil, 97 of Brooks, MN died on Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at McIntosh Manor Nursing home in McIntosh, MN. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5 – 8 PM with a 7:30 prayer service and also one hour prior to services on Friday all at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brooks, MN.
