Irene had been staying for a time at the home of her sister, Agnes Thomas. Home from school, she was making herself a snack by the cupboard. Grandfather Thomas threw some oily rags into the kitchen stove. The rags ignited and exploded, throwing the sparks and flames on Irene. Engulfed in fire, she ran. Mr. Thomas succeeded in estinguishing the flames, but not before Irene was cruelly burned. After four months of treatment in the hospitals of Gregory and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from October to January, she expired. Cause of death was 3rd degree burns Toxemia, secondary to burns.
