Mr. James Russell, Sr., 72, died Saturday morning (May 29, 2004) at his residence after an extended illness.

He is a native of Beckley, WV, but he has lived in Waycross since 1953. He retired from CSX Railroad as a carman after 40 years of service. He valued the friendship of his co-workers who affectionately knew him as "Hoss." He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict in the 5th Air Force, 49th Fighter/Bomber Group, 9th Fighter Squadron. For his service, he received the Japanese Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, and the Korean Pres. Unit Citation. He volunteered for Habitat Humanity and was a Boy Scout Troop Leader. He was also a member of First Christian Church where he had previously served as an Elder, Sunday School teacher, worship leader, and member of various committees.

He is the son of the late Henry Rolland Venters Russell and Edna Lola Bell Russell. He is also preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Marie Russell.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Christine Sloan Russell of Waycross; a daughter, Betty Carol Sumner (husband Roger) of Waycross; two sons, Henry Rolland Russell (wife Susan) and James "Rusty" Russell, Jr. (wife Donna) both of Waycross; six grandchildren, Jerry, Tim (wife Polly) and Ivey Sumner, Jordan and Sloan Russell, and Jayme Russell; a sister, Betty Russell St. Clair (husband Grover) of Beckley, WV; two sister-in-laws, Carolyn Wilson (husband Rev. Everett), and Shirley Grantham (husband Earl) both of Waycross; a brother-in-law, Jim Sloan (wife Laura) of Waycross; two aunts, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday (June 1, 2004) at First Christian Church, 412 McDonald St. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at Music Funeral Home.

The Elders of First Christian Church and New Beginnings Sunday School Class are asked to meet 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church to serve as honorary pallbearers.
