Irene Cordell
Mildred Irene Cordell, 94, known to all as Irene, St. Louis, was born in St. Clair on October 13, 1901. She is the daughter of the late Claude Ralph Cordell and Jennnie Maude Cordell, nee Moore. Irene died in Washington on December 26, 1995.
She is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Bruns, St. Clair, and Virginia Bay, Springfield; nieces, nephews, great- and great-great nieces and -nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Harry, Robert, and Clifford Cordell.
Irene was a Christian and current member of the First Presbyterian Church in Union. After graduating from high school, Irene had continued her education at Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield, where she received her associate degree. She then attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, where she received her bachelor's degree.
In later years, she attended the St. Louis Library School, receiving her librarian degree. Her career after college included teaching at Indian Prairie, Labadie, Central, Fenton and Oak Grove Elementary Schools, and Union Junior High School.
She then began her career as a librarian, serving many schools and other St. Louis area libraries; and was proud to have been the first librarian of a High School in (Southwest located on Kingshighway) in South St. Louis.
She also worked for the United States Army in handling classified information.
She was a 25-year member of the Business and Professional Women's Club of St. Louis, South Side Chapter.
Irene never tired of learning, and always kept pace of the ever-changing times and remained a dignified and professionial individual throughout her life. Although she had no children of her own, her many nieces and nephew's and their families were special to her.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 28, at the Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair with the Reverend Larry Sikes officiating. Interment was in the United Methodist Cemetery, St. Clair. Memorials may be made to the library of the First Presbyterian Church in Union.

Mildred was Aunt Irene's first name, but hadn't been known to many even family, and her official correspondence. Miss. was chosen to be put on her tombstone instead of Mildred because she always wanted to be referred to as Miss the exception friends.
