Graduated from Williams College in 1851 and from Berkshire Medical School in 1844
7th in descent of the Rev Peter Bulkley who established and founded the historic town of Concord MA in 1636
He moved to Washington a few years before the beginning of the Civil War and established a large and successful practice. He was the surgeon in charge of the Patent Hospital during the war and was one of the first doctors to examine President Lincoln after he was shot and stayed with him until he died.
