Byron Stratford Loosle, 80, a kind and selfless man, died peacefully of cancer at his home November 17, 2000, in Smithfield, Utah.

He was born Oct 7, 1920 to Bryon Lee Loosle and Ella Lauretta Larson in Clarkston, UT and was the oldest of eight children. In later years he spoke fondly of his up-bringing on the Clarkston farm. Strat-ford was educated in Cache Valley schools and obtain-ed his bachelors and masters degrees in education from Utah State University. He served his country in World War II, including service in Italy. Stratford was a vocal music teacher, devoting 36 years of his life to educating and enriching young people in the Cache County School District. He taught an estimated 10,000 students and directed numerous musical performances. Stratford spent countless hours beyond that required by this teaching position in rehearsals and performances for musicals and performing groups. He loved his students and took great pleasure in following their careers and successes after graduation. In addition to his work as an educator, Stratford shared his musical talents with his community and church by leading various choirs, including, among others, the Harmony Men, a Logan Temple Rededication Choir, and a 700 voice Logan Temple Centennial Choir. He was named as Smithfield City's Outstanding Citizen in 1976. In May 2000, Smithfield City Awarded Stratford the first annual "Stratford Loosle Cultural Arts Award", named in his honor, "in recognition of the many years of service he has given to improve the cultural lives of the people of Cache Valley." The award will be given each year to a young musician.

Stratford was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous capacities, including as a missionary in the Western States Mission, Bishop of the Smithfield First Ward, High Councilor for 18 years, First Counselor in the Stake Presidency, and as Patriarch in the Smithfield Utah Stake. Stratford married Kathleen Griffiths July 1, 1947 in the Logan LDS Temple and they are the parents of five children: Judy Hicken (Dee), Salt Lake City; Susan Gyllenskog (Jeff), Sandy; Jan Simmons (Mark), Providence; Lyndon Loosle (Annette), Smithfield; and Steven Loosle (Linda), Salt Lake City. He dearly loved his 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, and they loved his "grandpa kisses."

He is survived by three sisters, Rhea Archibald and Arlene Johnson, Hemet, CA; Ileen Barlow, Corvallis, OR; three brothers, Lyle Loosle (Mary) Mexico City, Mexico; Marlin Loosle (Terry) Hemet, CA; and Gordon Loosle (Joyce) Many Farms, AR; and sister-in- law Sharon Loosle, Smithfield, UT. He was preceded in death by his parents, by his sister Annabelle Buttars, and three brothers-in-law, Eldredge Archibald, Earl Johnson, and Elwood Barlow.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of Hospice of Cache Valley for their tender care and understanding, including Kathy, Margee, Leslie, Doty, and John.
