LUNSFORD — Hubert Batten, 83, of Lunsford passed away on Friday, July 24, 2009, at NEA Baptist Hospital.

He was born at Lunsford on Oct. 8, 1925, to William and Margaret Ramer Batten.

Mr. Batten was a retired factory worker and a member of the Lunsford Baptist Church. He'll be best remembered by his friends for always having a joke to tell them. He was a wonderful father to his daughters and a proud grandfather of his one and only grandson.

He leaves behind his two daughters, Charlotte (Pete) Porterfield of Luns-ford and Barbara (Buren) Knight of Newport News, Va; a stepson, Jimmy (Jeanie) Nelson of Foley, Ala.; a grandson, Israel Porterfield of Lunsford; Israel's fiancee, Dianna Benafield; and her daughter, Kelsey Plunkett.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Madlyn Batten; and a daughter, Brenda Batten.

Graveside funeral services and burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Pine Log Cemetery with Larry Owens officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today in Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will include Tommy Davis, Jimmy Rodgers, William McMasters, Herchel Wyatt, Cooper Taylor and Roger Hayes.

Honorary pallbearers will include J.C. Bland, William Bond, Alvin Brown, Keith Taylor, Dr. Doug Maglothin and members of the Lunsford Baptist Church.

Hubert's brother, Oscar Batten, was born in 1923 and worked as a farmer while young. "In January of 1944 he went to war as a Gunnar's Mate for the US Navy. He served aboard the USS Bryant and the USS George gaining a Purple Heart (and a steel plate to replace the top of his skull) and was discharged honorably just in time for Christmas 1945. He later took his wife - Lawanda Josephine (Wyse) Batten - and children to Pittsburg, California for a job at the steel mill. I remember my grandfather as a wonderfully funny man who was never to busy to play with my sister and I.
Oscar was cremated and his ashes scattered at sea." Told to me by his granddaughter.
Hubert also had an Uncle David Oscar Batten who was wounded in action during WWI.
