Father Ignatius of St Paul was born as Hon. George Spencer and was the youngest son of the 2nd Earl Spencer. He was born at Admiralty House, London. As a child he lived at Althorp and was tutored by his governess and his mother. At the age of nine he went to Eton College where he fell under the influence of the Reverend Richard Godley. In 1814 his education continued under the direction of one Reverend Blomfield of Buckinghamshire who provided him a classical education and prepared him for the sacrament of confirmation. In 1817 he went up to Trinity College, Cambridge where he studied Divinity. He embarked on the "Grand Tour" with his parents after leaving University.
Upon his return from the "Grand Tour" and as the youngest son of an aristocratic family, this was the expected career path for George to take. He undertook studies to prepare for ordination in the Angelican communion.
In 1822 he was ordained deacon and worked in a Sunday school for two years and as a magistrate in Northampton. In 1824 he was ordained as a priest and was presented by his father with the charge of the parish of Brington.
In 1830 he resigned his living in Brington and was received into the Catholic Church. He went to Rome to study at the Venerable English College where he came into contact with Nicholas Wiseman, later Cardinal. He also met Dominic Barberi, the Passionist priest. He was ordained deacon in Jan. 1832 and was made priest that same year.
He entered Passionist Order in 1841 and spent his life working for the conversion of England to the Catholic faith. In 1847 he received the Passionist habit from his friend Father Dominc Barberi. George received the religious name Father Ignatius of Saint Paul.

Father Ignatius of Saint Paul was buried alongside Dominic Barberi and Elizabeth Prout in St. Anne's, Sutton, St. Helens in the shrine church there. When his body was exhumed in 1973 it was noted that Father Ignatius suffered from horrific arthritis, but that his tongue had not suffered any decay since the day of his death.
In March 2007, the Church announced that the first stage of Father Ignatius' cause for beatification had been completed and that all the necessary documents had been forwarded to Rome. The next step in this process would be a declaration from the Holy See that Father Ignatius could be styled ‘Venerable'.
