Roby Chester passed away when I was a teenager but I remember he was a very kind and gentle man. Kids can tell these things. When Roby visited his sister, my grandmother "Mur," there was much talk and conversation was peppered with laughter. They shared family stories and caught up on the lastest news around Burke County.

Roby tended to drink too much and Mur worried about him all the time. She pleaded with him to stay away from liquor. When I was about ten I found a stash of liquor under one of the big boxwood bushes near Mur's house. I was torn about what to do about the bottle. I thought about Roby being upset; then I thought about Mur and her serious concern for his health. I unscrewed the cap from the bottle and poured out the liquor, certain I had just saved his life and spared Mur from much grief.

A few years later I rode my white pony 'Snow' over to visit Mur. She said Roby was asleep in the bedroom and we chatted and had a cold drink. I went to the door to make sure Snow was still nearby. Mur met me at the door laughing mischievously.

Mur asked me to bring Snow into the house and to the doorway where Roby was sleeping. I slowly led Snow up the steps and half way into the bedroom. Mur called to Roby and woke him up. Roby rousted awake and started to rub his eyes and squint. He didn't wear glasses but he appeared to try and rub the vision from his sight. He started yelling as if afraid, "God a mercy, a horse in the house, a horse in the house!" I quickly took Snow outside and said my good-byes.

Days later Mur told me Roby hadn't touched a drop of liquor in a while. Now I'm not sure if Roby drank again or not but seeing Snow helped for a little while. I do know alcohol is a tough addiction to break. Poor Roby was on and off 'the wagon' as long as I knew him. I have missed him and we have lauhed many times about "a horse in the house." I will tell you this, I loved Roby because he was such a sweet man, even when he was drinking. Kids know about these things.
