CARUTHERS.--The Rev. Richard Alexander Caruthers was born in Armstrong County, Pa., March 21, 1819, and died at his home, Bristow, Osborne County, Kansas, May 27, 1889. His parents were Presbyterians and reared their family in that faith. Two sons became ministers in that faith, but Richard became Arminian in sentiment. In his younger days he worked at the millwright trade. He married Miss Nancy Cook February 11, 1841. They had nine children; she with five children mourns his death. In 1843 he was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he became established, prominent and extensively useful. In 1848 he was licensed to preach in Clarion County, Pa. In July, 1848, he was received on trial in Erie Conference, and successively filled the following appointments: Ridgway Mission (Elk County, Pa) Washington Circuit, Shippensville, Curlsville, New Wilmington, Mercer Station, Clarksville, Wattsburg; Presiding Elder of Clarion District four years' Presiding Elder of Newcastle District four years; one year at Oil City Station; Presiding Elder of Fredonia District four years; one year Tenth Street, Erie City. In 1874 he was transferred to Kansas Conference and stationed at Baldwin City one year; at North Lawrence one year; two years Tecumseh; four years Presiding Elder of Kirwin District, an extensive field in a new country, but he was faithful in his work as Presiding Elder, kind as a father and counselor to his preachers; then on Bristow two years; Osborne City, two years; Agent for Wesleyan University, Salina, one year; one year superannuated. He represented Kansas Conference four times in the General Conference. For seventeen months he suffered with hemorrhage of the lungs and consumption of the stomach without mumuring, often expressing a desire to be released, and be at rest, but patiently waiting God's time. Often he was heard by the family communing with those gone before. His mind remained bright and clear. His last utterance was, "I am almost home." He was a good man, a sound and faithful minister, a kind husband and father, and a reliable and firm friend. May God sustain the widow and children in their sad bereavement!
