The family of Burton Smith Miller wishes to disclose his transition from this earthly life on Sunday, July 19, 2009.

Throughout his 91 years, he lived with such enthusiasm and vigor that those around him could only be inspired to seek, along with him, the very essence of life's many rewards.

He was a proud grandson of President Joseph F. Smith, a heritage ever dear to his personal quest to seek truth, to serve his fellow beings and amplify integrity in all his personal endeavors. Burton spent his childhood at Mt Air establishing many long life friends. He served in many positions for his church including two missions.

His zest for life led him to many experiences and remarkable achievements: he was an accomplished high school athlete, and excellent student, a recognized singer, a college graduate, he received a masters degree from the U of U, holder of a black belt in karate, member of the Alta Ski Patrol, a military veteran, askilled aircraft pilot, a poet, a master wood carver, a clothing manufacturer, and the owner of the Salt Lake Knit.

As an educator, he devoted his career to children with special needs, beginning as a speech and hearing therapist for the Jordan School District and later as the director of special education for the Salt Lake School District.

Born in Salt Lake City on December 20, 1917, the eighth child of Matthew A. and Minerva Smith Miller.

Married Margot S. Whitley in 1943. Later divorced. Together they had five children: Ann (Richard Eastlyn), Barbara (Ronald Schneider), Joan (Mark Kristic), Burton Arnold (Royceann) and Paula Miller.

Married Cheryl Watkins, his loving wife, on June 6, 1984. They have been blessed with 25 wonderful years together. Cheryl has cared for Burton with tenderness and patience and brought light and joy to his life, especially during the last years of his courageous life.

A celebration of Burton's life will be held at Tate Mortuary from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 and again from 9:30-10:45 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2009 in the Middle Canyon Ward Building, 777 Skyline Drive, with Funeral Services beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Interment will be in the Tooele City Cemetery.
