Manley Ashby Staples, son of Peleg S. and Mary Ella (Griffin) Staples, was born near Lloyds VA. He was employed by the RF&P Railroad for 35 years before retiring in 1946.

He married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Frances Whaling, Nov. 1908, and they resided in Stafford Co. VA. They had four daughters and a son.
