It is curious to guess what brought the daughter of a Confederate soldier together with a Union soldier from Maine, but they were married 7 April 1874 at her home in Lloyds. Peleg and Mary Ella went back his birthplace in Maine where their firstborn, Emma Gay, was born in Jan. 1875. Emma Gay lived only two months, and is buried in Maine. Their other 5 children were born in Lloyds, Essex Co. VA.
Mary Ella (Griffin) Staples was hit by a train crossing the railroad tracks with several of her grandchildren, who she pushed off the tracks to save their lives. She died two months later from her injuries.
