William A. Hinshaw was the son of George Washington & Elizabeth Jane Robertson Hinshaw. He married Martha Elizabeth Langston on September 24, 1868 (license date), in Jackson County, Alabama.

To this union was born children, including Thomas William, Mary Elizabeth (Miller), Rachel Ann (Swaim), William Ben, Martha Jane (Gifford), Nancy E. (Walker), Eliza M. (Fanning), Alice Serena (Clark), and Warren Fannie (Henshaw [married Marvin Henshaw]).

William A. was the great-great-great-grandson of Jacob Hinshaw, a Quaker, who came to America from Ireland in 1741; and the great-great-grandson of Thomas Hinshaw, who was shunned by the quakers for having married someone outside of the Quaker society.
