Traer Star Clipper, Friday, June 14th, 1957 – page 1
Mrs. J. W. Beecher, probably the Traer community's oldest resident, died at 1:30 yesterday afternoon in the Shiveley Convalescent Home near Dysart, where she had been a patient since the closing of Sunset Manor Restorium here. She was 96. Mrs. Beecher suffered a hip fracture several weeks ago and submitted to surgery in a Waterloo hospital to pin the bone. She withstood the operation well, but she had not been able to regain strength since.
Grandmother Beecher was born Hannah Rebecca Heiser, near Millerstown, Juniata county, Pennsylvania on December 2, 1860. Her early life was spent in Pennsylvania She attended school in Millerstown and helped out in the family home until her marriage in 1877 to J. W. Beecher, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Mr. Beecher had worked as a miller in a grist mill as a young man, but the future of the blacksmith trade looked more promising, so he learned that business. He liked it so well that he made it his life's work in 1895 the Beecher family came west to settle in the village of Dinsdale, where Mr. Beecher's blacksmith and wagon shop business flourished for many' years. Their family was reared there, in the house opposite the school building. Mr. Beecher died in Dinsdale in 1924. Mrs. Beecher continued her home- in Dinsdale until 15 years ago when she was persuaded, because of infirmities of old age, to make her home in Traer with her elder son, Will, and his daughter, Mary. A year or two ago she was taken to Sunset Manor Restorium for nursing care and remained there until it closed several weeks ago.
For many years Mrs. Beecher had been crippled by arthritis and had to give up cultivation of a garden and flowers, in which she was proficient. After she was unable to work outside she became a prolific reader, and was interested and well posted on current events. She has not been able to read much during the last two years. Her genial disposition and never failing good humor endeared her to many folks. The Beechers were parents of eight children, four of whom are living Will and Merrill, of Traer; Ira, of Cedar Rapids; and Homer, of Camas, Washington. Three daughters - Matilda, Ethel and Olive— and a son, Charles, preceded her in death. She leaves five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mrs. Beecher was the last of the Heiser family. Two brothers are deceased. The son, Homer, in Washington state, is coming, and the funeral services have been set for 2 o'clock Monday afternoon in the States Funeral Home. Interment will be beside her husband in Grant township (Amity) cemetery.
