Nettie Preston Colt was the daughter of Almon Davis Colt and Ida Belle Huyck. She married Fred Gradner Sortman on 4 July 1900 in Watkins Glen, New York. Nettie was very active in many of the social, political, and philanthropic movements of her time. She was tall for a woman of her time and this placed her out in front of a number of local movements and parades. Today we would call her an "activist". She was very active in the local chapter of the American War Mothers serving as its first vice president, later its president, and then as the Pennsylvania State Chaplain.
