Emery Setzer Rites At Cong. Church
Emery J. Setzer 52,president of Hillsboro City Council and a prominent business and civic leader in this city,passed away at 5:30p.m. Saturday,May31,1958 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hillsboro.He had apparently been in usual health when Friday evening,May 22nd he suddenly suffered a stroke at his home at 713 Water Avenue. He was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment and was apparently recovering when he suffered another stroke which resulted in his death.
Funeral services were held at the First Congregational Church here at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday,June 3rd.The Rev.J.Paul Tatter,Pastor of the church,officiated at the rites. Burial was at Mt.Vernon Cemetery.
Emery John Setzer,son of Herman Setzer and Belle Huffman Setzer,was born March 19,1906 in the Town of Greenwood,Vernon County,Wisconsin. He attended the Debello School and grew to young manhood in that community.
He was married in 1928 to Miss Wynona Totten,of Crandon,Wisconsin. Mr. and Mrs. Setzer established their home on the farm in Greenwood Twp.which is known as the Setzer Homestead.They continued to reside there until six years ago when they moved to the city of Hillsboro where they purchased the residence at 713 Water Ave. which has since been their home.
Surviving Mr. Setzer are his wife,Mrs.Wynona Setzer of Hillsboro;two sons,Donald and Roger,both of Hillsboro;five grandchildren;his Mother,Mrs Belle Setzer of Hillsboro;two sisters,Millie Durkee of Elroy,Lucinda Chitwood of Janesville;other relatives and many friends.He was preceded in death by his Father Herman and one son who passed away in infancy.
In 1952 Mr.Setzer established the Setzer Implement Company,a firm dealing in farm machinery and supplies,which has become a leading Hillsboro business enterprise,widely known throughout the area,located at 725 Water St.
In the death of Mr.Setzer this city has lost a sincere,able and energetic public leader whose contribution to the progress and advancement of Hillsboro is a memorable and much appreciated achievment.His successive re-election to the position of Alderman,at the last election without opposition,was indicative of the confidence of the electors and of Mr.Setzer's leadership on behalf of the city of Hillsboro.
Those who knew him best will also remember Mr.Setzer for his great devotion to his family,for his constant thoughtfulness of those who were near and dear to him.He will also be remembered as a loyal friend who was always considerate sympathetic and helpful;and as a good neighbor who was glad to cooperate in every worthy project,and to volunteer assistance whenever there was need.
In business,in civic action and in association with other people he won the high regard and lasting friendship of all who knew him.
