Jacob Zimmerman's family moved to Delta, Ohio (now in Fulton Co.) in 1839 (See: "The County of Fulton", Thomas Mikesell [1905] p. 490-492). He was married to Sarah Lovina Wilbur on Febrary 13, 1859 in Ogden Township, Lenawee Co., Michigan. They had two sons who died in infancy. One of them died just fifteen days before Jacob was killed at the Battle of Jonesboro. Lovina did not remarry or have more children. She was just 26 years old when Jacob was killed.

Military: He was joined the 38th Regiment, O.V.I: Co., I which was organized at Defiance, Ohio. Mustered in: 25 August 1861; Killed: 1 September 1864 at Battle of Jonesboro.

Certificate of Discharge of Duty Due to Death: "I certify, on honor, that Jacob Zimmerman, a Private of Lt. Joseph B. Coons Co. 'I' of the 38th Regiment of Infantry Volunteers, of the State of Ohio, born in TUSCARAWAS CO., State of Ohio, aged 25 years; 5 feet 9 1/4 inches high; Fair complexion, Blue eyes, Light hair, and by occupation a Drayman (load carrier), having joined the company on its original organization at Delta Ohio [25 Aug 1861], and enrolled in it at the muster into the service of the United States at Defiance Ohio, on the Tenth day of September, 1861, to serve in the Regiment, for the term of Three Years; and having served honestly and faithfully with his Company in The Field to the present date, is now entitled to a discharge by reason of Death, Killed in action at Jonesboro Georgia on the 1st day of September 1864. The said Jacob Zimmerman was last paid by Paymaster Maj. Hulet to include the 30th day of April, 1864, and has pay due him from that time to the present date. He is entitled to pay and subsistence for traveling to place of enrollment, and whatever other allowances are authorized to volunteer soldiers, drafted men, or militia, so discharged. He has received from the United States clothing amounting to $10.58, since the 31st day of December 1863, when his clothing account was last settled. Given in Duplicated, near Atlanta, Georgia, this 22nd day of September 1864. David Renton, 1st Lieut. Co.'I' 38th OVI, Commanding Company."
