William Marcellus Beattie + Rhoda Ann Watson = 13 children. Then, Rhoda died in 1914, and Marcellus re-married BESSIE MARY GREEN in 1915 = having 2 more children (Deloy & Thaila Spackman)∼William's birth year is often estimated at 1760 based on the fact his headstone says he died at "abt 100 years of age". There is some evidence however, that he was not quite 100. The 1860 Washington Co. VA mortality schedule, recorded a few months after his death but including everyone who died in the 12 months prior to June 1 1860, stated that William died in April at age 98. On the 1850 Washington Co. population schedule William was 87 years old. Also, his older sister Jane is believed to have been born in 1760.

On the other side of the coin, his son Madison, writing to the historian Lyman Draper in 1880, stated that William was born in 1760. However, Madison also told Draper his parents married in 1789 which is a good 10 years after the fact.

Until a Bible or similiar record surfaces to document William's year of birth I feel a range of 1760-1763 is more accurate than choosing a single year. Since the Find A Grave date field does not accept a date range I have left the birth field empty.
