Farmer and laborer, Absalom (youngest child of James and Elizabeth Marsh Hissey) signed up with Company B, 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 21, 1862. Wounded while defending Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg, PA on July 2, 1863, Absalom was killed at the beginning of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, GA on June 19, 1864. The story of his family, and of his military history and death, are told in "Absalom's War: The Life and Death of a Young Ohio Farmer in the Civil War." (2014)

He was mentioned in the book "Buckeye Blood Ohio at Gettysburg" by Richard Baumgartner, on page 85
