Elba Ann McWethy was conceived in June 1865. One must assume John had a period of leave (from the Civil War) in June and had been able to return home to Ohio.
John McWethy (37) is thought to have walked all the way from Macon, Georgia, across the Appalachian Mountains back to his family home in Darke County, Ohio. It was a distance of at least 600 miles. At twenty miles a day, this would have taken him about a month of continual walking. Birth of Elba Ann McWethy on 3rd February. John would probably have arrived home three weeks later. Elba Ann died the following August.
(I have trouble with the time frame of travel. A horse walks at 4 mph, a man can walk as fast as a horse. A man that is in a hurry to get home would walk as long as it is light out and sometime during the dark stopping only to eat. If a man walks 4mph and walks 12 hours at a time, they can walk 600 miles in 12.5 days).
